The Master Gardener was a member of the Martians species and native to the planet Mars where he had extensive knowledge in the biological sciences. However, despite all his knowledge, he was unable to stop the spread of the microbes that killed his children though he was able to keep himself alive. Over the ages, he was left entirely alone and haunted by the funeral pyres of his babies. During this time, he encountered the Lizard Men who themselves were lonely and isolated. Using his own abilities, he made them believe that he was their long lost Father-God and used his horticultural skills to provide them new thoughts. Thus, the Lizard Men became his new children but the Master Gardener was unable to bear continued existence on the dead plains of his homeworld. Thus, he decided he needed to relocate to a new planet that was rich with life and one that he could prune and nurture in harmony. As a result, he and the Lizard Men moved to the planet Earth to make it their new home. Another reason for him choosing the planet was because it was an event nexus where cosmic forces led to the creation of great beings or attracted such individuals to it. Earth thus produced heroes that could bring chaos, rebellion and conflict that went into contrast with the Master Gardener's own quest for harmony.

American SecretsEdit

ALong with the shape-shifting Lizard Men, the Master Gardener of Mars arrived on Earth during the years of World War II where they took advantage of the chaos of this time period to infiltrate governments along with communication cartels. The Master Gardener had plants grown that bore a fungus which bonded to the human nervous system and controlled these individuals. Those that fell under their sway lived under the threat of spontaneous combustion if they refused. Together with the Lizard Men, they established a base of operations in Puerto Iberez in Cuba where they exported the plants arond the world and began infecting much of the human population with their tyranny. The actions of the Master Gardener led to the Justice Society of America being forced to retire and also allowed him dominion over the media. This was all part of his plans to serve harmony by taming heroes. In 1959, the Master Gardener's existence was discovered by a fellow Martian who was a Manhunter survivor of his homeworld. J'Onn J'Onzz opposed his Martian brethren and battled against the Master Gardener. During the confrontation between the two, the Lizard Men used advanced flame throwers to battle the Martian Manhunter. It was then that they discovered that their Father-God's vulnerability. In the final conflict, the Master Gardener only chuckled at his "children's error" before he seemingly died from the flames. After being left leaderless, the Lizard Men conspiracy collapsed and their power base was dismantled.
